When young children are first learning to read, they begin with the basics. After learning the alphabet and the sound that each letter makes, they put them together to form the simplest of words, then short sentences. In my life without abuse, my healing process may be similar. My leaving was comparable to a child becoming willing to read. Learning about the dynamics of domestic violence and how they relate to my own situation is like learning my alphabet. Once I begin to implement suggestions and advice from people who are knowledgeable about domestic violence, I’ll learn how to put the letters of my life together to make words. Soon, I will have enough information to begin a life without abuse and make decisions that will keep me out of abusive relationships. I don’t have to be upset that I’m not farther along than I want to be. When children are first beginning to read, they read slowly and make mistakes. Today I will allow myself the same consideration and patience. Before long, I will be able to make wise decisions quickly, but for now, as long as I’m willing to learn, I will be patient with myself.
