African-Americans in Treatment

Dealing With Cultural Differences

Author: Tommie M. Richardson and Brenda A. Williams

Publisher: Hazelden

Format: Pamphlet

Price: $3.25

  --OR--

Description:

"We have had to endure the hardships of racism, educational discrimination, and economic exploitation throughout our lives.  Indeed, this is heavy burden to live with."  -- From African-Americans in Treatment

Similarly, chemical dependency is a heavy burden to overcome.  This pamphlet, written by African-Americans in the treatment field, takes a no-nonsense look at African-Americans in treatment.  The authors focus on issues unique to African-Americans in the treatment setting and in the recovering community:  participating and interating in a white treatment setting; learning more about oneself through opening up to others in the group therapy process, and the benefits of an African-American group; and following a path toward continuing care and relapse prevention once treatment is completed.

Two issues of primary importance -- interacting with others, and understanding the African-American culture -- are thoroughly discussed to assist and empower African-Americans to get their needs met so they can live lives free of alcohol and other drugs.

About the authors:

Tommie M. Richardson, M.D., is attending addiction medical specialist on the Addictive Diseases Unit at Charter Peachford Hospital, Atlanta, where he instituted an African-American sociocultural perspective group.

Brenda A. Williams, C.A.C., is clinical director of Parksside Recovery Place in Atlanta. Ms. William's focus on the needs of the African-American client is reflected by her involvement with the Institute on Black Chemical Abuse.
